Anna Banti, Artemisia Gentileschi and Women Artists in Florence,
16th-20th centuries
September 28th – October 3rd, 2026
The prestigious Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte, set in the stunning surroundings of Villa Il Tasso in Florence – once home to art historian Roberto Longhi and writer Anna Banti – is proud to present an intensive course dedicated to Anna Banti, the “discoverer” of Artemisia Gentileschi and author of the first major novel exploring the life and career of the celebrated painter – welcomed in Florence by Cosimo II and recognized as the leading artist at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno.
This engaging program combines lectures, guided visits, workshops, and discussions, offering participants a unique opportunity to explore Banti’s writings, archival material, and art collection. It traces the rediscovery of female artists active in Florence from the 16th to the 20th century, highlighting their connections with contemporary women writers, painters, and photographers. Featured artists, documented in the Villa Il Tasso art collection, include painters Adriana Pincherle, Leonetta Pieraccini Cecchi, Deiva De Angelis, Piera Fabbri, and photographer Ghitta Carell.
Participants will have direct access to exceptional research tools and an extensive art collection featuring masterpieces from the 13th to the 20th century. They will also enjoy exclusive access to the Foundation’s rich historical and photographic archives, including numerous autographs by Banti and Longhi. The program is further enriched by expert-led visits and in-depth workshops in collaboration with some of Florence’s most prestigious institutions, including the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, the Museo della Fondazione Casa Buonarroti, the Biblioteca Marucelliana, and the Gabinetto Vieusseux.
